The Return of the Hockey India League: A New Champion Awaits in Chennai
The highly anticipated Hockey India League (HIL) 2026 has kicked off, with the defending champions, Shrachi Bengal Tigers, leading the eight-team battle. The action started in Chennai on 3rd January at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium, Egmore.
Defending Champions Shrachi Bengal Tigers
Shrachi Bengal Tigers, coming as defending champions, will aim to repeat their victory in this second edition of the revived Men's Hockey India League. The league, scheduled to be held in multiple cities, will travel to Ranchi and conclude in Bhubaneswar with the final on 26th January, 2026.
Competitive Matches and Broadcast Schedule
The league commenced with the hosts Accord Tamil Nadu Dragons facing Hyderabad Toofans, who finished as runners-up in the previous edition. Toofans will be eager to change their fortune this time around, while Tamil Nadu Dragons aim to start on a high note after missing out on the 3rd place last season.
The broadcast schedule for all men's matches is available, with live coverage starting on Sony Ten 1, Sony Ten 3 Hindi, Doordarshan Waves, and YouTube from 28th December, 2025.
Single Round-Robin Stage and Playoffs
Unlike the previous edition, this season will feature a single round-robin stage, with the top four teams advancing to the knockout rounds. The playoffs will see the top 2 teams competing in Qualifier 1, with the winner advancing to the final, and the loser going into Qualifier 2.
The second team for Qualifier 2 will be decided by the winner of Eliminator 1, which will be contested by the teams ranked 3rd and 4th on the league table.
North East India's Connection
For North East India, the league offers an excellent opportunity to witness high-octane matches featuring top players from around the globe. The league's journey will eventually reach Ranchi, bringing the excitement closer to the region.
