Analysis: Not easy when you miss out on something, knowing that you had it: Humpy

Reflections on Missed Opportunities: Koneru Humpy's Bronze at World Rapid Chess Championship

A Tale of Near Victory: Koneru Humpy's Bronze at the World Rapid Chess Championship

Koneru Humpy, a renowned figure in Indian women's chess, recently ended her World Rapid title defense on a bitter-sweet note. Despite an undefeated run, Humpy settled for a bronze medal, missing out on the gold in a heart-breaking last-round endgame.

Regulations and Their Impact

The FIDE regulations, which stipulate that only the top two women progress to the tie-breaks, while all tied toppers in the Open section do, sparked divided opinions on social media. Humpy, however, acknowledged that the rule was not unfair to her, but suggested a need for uniformity across genders in such tournaments.

The Last-Round Blunder

In the final round, Humpy found herself in a winning position against Savitha Shri B. With less than a minute on the clock, a crucial bishop move led to a 64-move draw, costing Humpy the gold. This mistake, according to Humpy, was the only one in the entire tournament.

The Emotional Toll of Chess

Humpy acknowledged that such mistakes can linger in the mind for a long time. She shared her experiences of letting superior positions slip in the past, including a Grand Prix in Monaco in 2016, where nerves, emotions, and stress played a significant role.

Looking Ahead: The Women's Candidates Tournament

Despite the disappointment, Humpy's consistent performance in the World Rapid Championship earned her the top spot in the FIDE Circuit leaderboard for women. As she prepares for the Women's Candidates Tournament in March-April, Humpy remains optimistic, looking forward to competing against the youngsters and making her mark.

In the North East region and across India, Humpy's journey serves as an inspiration. Her resilience in the face of adversity and her unwavering commitment to her sport are testaments to her character. As she continues to push boundaries and challenge herself, Humpy remains a beacon of hope for aspiring chess players.
