Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, has emphasized India's ambitious goal of a Top-10 Olympic finish, setting the stage for a transformative era in the nation's sports landscape.
Governance Reforms: The Foundation
At a recent Sports Governance Conclave in Ahmedabad, Mandaviya outlined the Government's commitment to reforming India's sports ecosystem, focusing on governance, talent development, coaching, and private sector participation.
The Minister highlighted key initiatives such as the National Sports Governance Act (NSGA), Khelo Bharat Niti, and improvements in coach recruitment systems, demonstrating the government's resolve to address long-standing issues within sports federations.
Talent Development: Grassroots to Elite
Mandaviya stressed the need for a systematic approach to talent identification and nurturing, from grassroots to elite levels, to ensure consistent improvement in India's performance at major international competitions.
He also called for professionalizing sports bodies, with qualified CEOs, financial experts, marketing professionals, international-level coaches, and specialized operations teams.
Private Sector Participation: A Game Changer
Mandaviya highlighted the potential of private sector participation in sports infrastructure, academies, and leagues, noting that this could drive innovation, efficiency, and growth in Indian sports.
He announced upcoming policy initiatives such as transparent and standardised selection trials, the One Corporate, One Sport model, and enhanced athlete welfare packages.
The North East Connection
The Minister's vision for Indian sports has significant implications for the North East region, which boasts a rich sports culture and a pool of talented athletes.
By fostering a conducive environment for sports development, the Government's initiatives could provide opportunities for North Eastern athletes to shine on the national and international stage.
Looking Forward: The Road Ahead
With the 2026 Asian Games and the 2030 Commonwealth Games on the horizon, the pressure is on for India's National Sports Federations and State Olympic Associations to deliver results.
As the Minister pointed out, history will remember what we achieve now, and it will not forgive what we fail to do. The coming years promise to be a defining period in India's sports history.
