Analysis: Is Sourav Ganguly the first Indian to become coach of non-IPL franchise?

Sourav Ganguly Makes History as First Indian Coach Outside IPL

Why Sourav Ganguly's SA20 Coaching Stint Matters

The cricket world has been abuzz with the news that former Indian captain and BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly, has taken up the role of head coach for the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 2025-26 tournament. This appointment marks a significant milestone, as Ganguly becomes the first Indian to coach a franchise outside the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ganguly's Appointment and Previous Roles

Ganguly's coaching journey began in August 2025 when he replaced Jonathan Trott as the head coach of the Pretoria Capitals. The former left-handed batsman's first assignment, however, ended in a defeat against Joburg Super Kings in the opening game of the tournament. Despite this setback, Ganguly is determined to guide the Capitals to success in the SA20 2025-26 edition.

Relevance to North East India

The cricket-loving North East region of India can take pride in the achievements of one of their own, as Ganguly's journey from the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) to the international coaching scene is a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport.

Ganguly's First Stint as Head Coach

Prior to his coaching career, Ganguly served as the President of the CAB from 2015 to 2019. He also held the position of mentor for the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2019 before becoming the President of the BCCI. In October 2024, he joined JSW Sports, the parent company of both the Delhi Capitals (IPL) and Pretoria Capitals (SA20) teams, as the Director of Cricket, which played a significant role in his appointment as the head coach of the Capitals.

The Road Ahead for Pretoria Capitals

With Ganguly at the helm, the Pretoria Capitals aim to claim their maiden title in the current edition of SA20. In the previous season, they failed to qualify for the playoffs, finishing fifth in the points table.

Supporting Cast: Shaun Pollock

Former South Africa captain Shaun Pollock has been appointed as the assistant coach of the Pretoria Capitals for the fourth edition of SA20. The presence of Pollock, a seasoned cricketer and coach, is expected to provide valuable insights and guidance to the team.

Relevance to India

Ganguly's success as a coach outside the IPL could pave the way for more Indian coaches to explore opportunities in international leagues, thereby enriching the global cricket landscape.

Reflections and Looking Forward

As Sourav Ganguly embarks on this new chapter in his cricket journey, the North East region and the broader Indian cricket community will be eagerly following his progress. With his unwavering spirit and determination, there is no doubt that Ganguly will continue to make history and inspire future generations of cricketers.
