Analysis: Defending champ Ohio State in 3rd Cotton Bowl in a row, Miami back in Texas where it won CFP debut

Ohio State and Miami Set for Cotton Bowl Showdown

The Cotton Bowl Rematch: Ohio State and Miami Face Off Again

The stage is set for an exciting College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup as defending champions Ohio State and first-time participant Miami prepare to face off in the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Eve. This will mark the third consecutive year that the Buckeyes have appeared in the Cotton Bowl and the return of Miami to Texas, where they won their College Football Playoff (CFP) debut.

Ohio State's Quest for Redemption

Ohio State, ranked third, is looking to bounce back from a 13-10 loss to undefeated No. 1 Indiana in the Big Ten championship game on Dec. 6. Despite the loss, they managed to secure the second seed and a first-round bye in the 12-team playoff. The extended break has given the team more time to reflect on their missed opportunity for a conference title.

"We had to take a step back because that loss kind of hurt," Ohio State cornerback Lorenzo Styles said. "We had to feel that pain, but then it's like everything we want is still in front of us." The Buckeyes are the only team to appear in five of the last seven CFPs, all under head coach Ryan Day, and will be aiming for their seventh overall appearance, which began with a win in the inaugural CFP championship game at the end of the 2014 season.

Miami's Cinderella Run

Miami, ranked 10th, earned an at-large berth despite not making the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. The Hurricanes had a three-week gap between their regular season-ending win at Pittsburgh and their CFP debut, which they won 10-3 against seventh-seeded Texas A&M on Dec. 20.

Miami coach Mario Cristobal isn't sure if the time gaps between games for either side will have an advantage or disadvantage. "You can never tell," Cristobal said. "That's gone back and forth in so many different ways over the years."

North East Connection: Indianapolis Ties

Both Ohio State and Miami have connections to the North East region. Ohio State's historic CFP championship win in 2014 took place in Indianapolis, the same city where the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four and numerous other major sporting events are held.

Additionally, the Cotton Bowl has been a regular stop for several Indian football teams, including Ohio State and Texas, in the past. The game's rich history and location in the heart of the United States make it an attractive destination for teams and fans alike.

Reflections and Looking Ahead

As both teams prepare for their New Year's Eve showdown, the stakes are high. For Ohio State, it's a chance to avenge their Big Ten championship game loss and continue their CFP streak. For Miami, it's an opportunity to make history as a first-time participant and potentially secure a spot in the national championship game.

"We know the last time we stepped on the field, we left something on the field," Ohio State linebacker and brother Sonny Styles said. "So this time, we got to leave everything out there."
