Elon Musk's SpaceX has announced plans to lower the orbits of about 4,400 Starlink satellites this year. This move, aimed at enhancing space safety, comes in response to several recent incidents involving Starlink satellites.

Reducing Risk of Collisions

Starlink's Vice President of Engineering, Michael Nicolls, stated that the company is implementing a "significant reconfiguration" of its satellite constellation. This reconfiguration will lower the satellites' orbits from around 550 kilometers to approximately 480 km. This change will reduce the risk of collisions by placing the satellites in a less crowded region and allowing for quicker deorbiting in case of an incident.

Preparing for Solar Minimum

Nicolls also highlighted the approaching solar minimum, a period of lower solar activity, as a reason for the move. During solar minimum, atmospheric density decreases, increasing the ballistic decay time at any given altitude. By lowering the satellites' orbits, Starlink expects a reduction in ballistic decay time by over 80% during solar minimum, shortening the time from several years to a few months.

Addressing Recent Incidents

The announcement follows a few weeks after Starlink reported an anomaly with one of its satellites, which created debris and sent it tumbling. Additionally, Nicolls had previously expressed concerns about a close call with a batch of satellites launched from China without coordination with existing satellite operators.
