Lego Introduces Smart Play System: A Revolution in Building Blocks

The Dawn of Connected Building Blocks

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026, Lego unveiled its latest innovation, the Smart Play system. This groundbreaking initiative marks Lego's largest move towards integrating connected technology into its classic building blocks, offering an interactive experience never seen before.

The Heart of the Revolution: Smart Bricks

The cornerstone of the Smart Play system is the Smart Brick, a standard 2 x 4 brick, equipped with modern technology. The Smart Brick is powered by a 4.1mm ASIC chip, smaller than a Lego stud, which runs the Play Engine. This engine allows the brick to sense motion, orientation, and magnetic fields, transforming the building experience.

Sensing and Interaction

Integrated copper coils enable the Smart Brick to sense distance, direction, and orientation of other nearby Smart Bricks during the building process. Additionally, the brick boasts a tiny built-in speaker, an accelerometer, and an LED array.

Audio and Visual Enhancements

The speaker in the Smart Brick produces audio that responds to live play actions rather than just playing pre-recorded clips, enhancing the interactive experience. The LED array adds visual effects to the play experience, making the sets come alive.

Expanding the Smart Play Ecosystem

Two other components, Smart Tags and Smart Minifigures, complement the Smart Brick. The Smart Tag is a 2 x 2 studless tile with a digital ID that the Smart Brick can read via near-field magnetic communication. The Smart Minifigure also has a digital ID, which can be read by NFC.

The Role of Smart Tags and Minifigures

These components help the Smart Brick understand the context of play, as the Smart Tag tells the Brick what object, animal, or vehicle it should become. For instance, a Smart Tag in a Lego Star Wars X-Wing set will contain the unique ID and instructions for how the Smart Brick should behave.

Building Wirelessly: BrickNet

Lego has developed a local wireless layer called BrickNet to connect all these Smart pieces together. Based on Bluetooth, BrickNet uses Lego's proprietary Neighbor Position Measurement system, allowing the bricks to communicate and interact without the need for apps, internet connections, or external controls.

Bringing it All Together: The Smart Play Sets

Lego is launching the Smart Play system with its biggest licensed partner, Star Wars. Three all-in-one Star Wars sets will be available, catering to kids rather than the larger sets aimed at adults. The sets will be priced higher than their non-smart counterparts but are still reasonable.
