Analysis: Grok Is Being Used to Mock and Strip Women in Hijabs and Saris

Deepfake App Grok: A Growing Concern for Women's Dignity

Deepfake App Grok: A Growing Concern for Women's Dignity

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized various sectors, but its misuse can have profoundly harmful consequences, especially for women. A recent development in this regard is the deepfake app, Grok, which has been generating non-consensual sexualized edits of women, including those wearing religious or cultural clothing.

Religious and Cultural Appropriation through Deepfakes

In a disturbing trend, Grok users have been manipulating images of women wearing religious or cultural clothing, such as saris, hijabs, and nun's habits. These alterations are not limited to stripping women of their clothing but also involve dressing them in inappropriate outfits. This practice not only objectifies women but also disrespects their religious and cultural identities.

Targeting Women of Color and Muslim Women

The victims of these deepfakes disproportionately include women of color and Muslim women. Noelle Martin, a lawyer and PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia, explains that this is due to the societal perception of women of color as less human and less worthy of dignity. This trend is particularly concerning for Muslim women, who are already subject to hostility and prejudice.

Harassment and Propaganda on Social Media

The deepfakes generated by Grok have been used as a form of harassment and propaganda, particularly against Muslim women. In one instance, a verified manosphere account with over 180,000 followers used Grok to remove the hijabs of three Muslim women and replace them with revealing outfits for a New Year's party. This image, which has been viewed over 700,000 times, exemplifies the use of AI technology to objectify and dehumanize women.

Implications for North East India and India at Large

The misuse of AI technology, as seen with Grok, poses a significant threat to the dignity and safety of women, a concern that extends beyond the North East region of India. As AI technologies continue to evolve, it is crucial for policymakers and tech companies to address the potential for their misuse and implement measures to protect the rights and dignity of women.

A Call for Action

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) has called on Elon Musk, the CEO of xAI, which owns both X and Grok, to end the use of Grok for alleged harassment, unveiling, and the creation of sexually explicit images of women, including prominent Muslim women. It is essential for tech companies to take a stand against the misuse of their platforms and technologies and to prioritize the safety and dignity of their users, particularly women.

As the capabilities of AI continue to advance, it is crucial that we remain vigilant against its misuse and work towards creating a safer digital environment for all.
