Every year, MIT Technology Review publishes a list of 10 Breakthrough Technologies. Over the past 25 years, these lists have highlighted 250 groundbreaking technologies. However, not all of these breakthroughs have succeeded as initially envisioned. Analyzing these failures provides valuable insights into the factors that contribute to a technology's success, including cultural context, social acceptance, market competition, and timing.
Flops from the Breakthrough List: Lessons Learned
Social TV (2010)
The idea behind Social TV was to connect social platforms and streaming services, making it easier for friends to chat or interact while watching live TV shows remotely. Although this concept reflected the potential for connection in the modern era, it relied on live TV, which was in decline. Instead, the emergence of streaming platforms and social media allowed for a more organic, independent viewing experience.
The DNA App Store (2016)
Helix's DNA app store, which offered genome sequencing for $80 and allowed users to share their data with third-party apps, faced privacy concerns and doubts about the accuracy of these apps. This led to the shutdown of the store and a shift in consumer behavior towards more regulated health apps.
Universal Memory (2005)
The vision behind universal memory was to create a single memory technology that would replace existing methods. Nantero, the company behind the technology, faced challenges in producing the memory at scale and upending deeply embedded memory technologies.
Light-Field Photography (2012)
Lytro's light-field camera, which allowed users to adjust the focus of photos after they were taken, was ultimately not successful with consumers due to competition from established incumbents like Sony and Nokia, as well as the camera's low resolution and manual focus adjustments.
Project Loon (2015)
Project Loon, a Google X project that aimed to provide internet access using balloons, faced commercial hurdles, including partnerships with local telecom providers and government approvals to navigate in national airspaces. Despite field tests in multiple countries and emergency internet service in Puerto Rico, the project was shut down in 2021.

Looking Forward: Lessons for Future Technologies
Analyzing failed technologies not only reveals the pitfalls to avoid but also provides opportunities to reimagine and improve upon these ideas. For example, synthetic data for AI, which was chosen as a potential flop in 2022, could be improved by ensuring that AI models are trained on a diverse range of real-world data to avoid model collapse. Similarly, TikTok's recommendation algorithm, which was chosen as a potential flop in 2021, could be improved by giving users more control over the content they see and the type of recommendations they receive.
The annual practice of making bold predictions about breakthrough technologies is worthwhile, as it provides a sense of what advances are on the technology community's radar and reflects the economic, social, and cultural values that inform every pick. As we revisit the 2026 list in a few years, we will see which of today's values have prevailed.
