Analysis: NBC Sports will soon use AI to put your favorite athletes front and center during live broadcasts

NBC Sports Embraces AI for Personalized Sports Viewing

NBC Sports Revolutionizes Live Sports Viewing with AI

Revolutionizing the Viewing Experience

NBC Sports is transforming the way mobile viewers experience live sports by introducing a new player tracking system powered by AI. This innovation offers fans a more personalized and interactive viewing experience, allowing them to zoom in on their favorite athletes during live events.

Facial Recognition Technology at the Forefront

The technology behind this system, viztrick AiDi, is developed by Nippon Television Network in Japan. It uses facial recognition to track players in real-time, a capability that sets the stage for a new era of immersive sports broadcasting.

A Mobile-First Approach

Unlike previous implementations of viztrick AiDi, NBC Sports is not focusing on adding overlays to the main broadcast. Instead, they are creating mobile-first viewing options by extracting footage of a selected athlete from a standard horizontal broadcast and reframing it into a vertical format optimized for smartphones.

A New Era for Live Coverage

Tim Canary, SVP of Engineering at NBC Sports, emphasizes the significance of this technology: "We were looking for the right tool for streaming live sports that would automatically crop athletes to a 9:16 aspect ratio with auto tracking. AiDi is that tool. AiDi was designed and developed by broadcasters, so it solves the specific challenges we face every day."

Flexibility in Action

AiDi offers flexibility, allowing broadcasters to switch between AI mode and manual mode, ensuring the selected athlete remains in focus during camera switches.

Looking Ahead

While specific sports or events have yet to be announced, NBC Sports is poised to cover the 2026 Winter Olympics, providing a high-profile showcase for this groundbreaking technology.

Implications for North East India and Beyond

As the sports broadcasting landscape evolves, it's essential for broadcasters in North East India to consider similar innovations to enhance viewer engagement and stay competitive. The potential for AI in sports broadcasting extends beyond personalization, offering opportunities for real-time analysis, enhanced statistics, and immersive fan experiences.

A New Chapter in Sports Broadcasting

With the integration of AI into sports broadcasting, we are entering a new era where viewers can tailor their sports experience to their preferences. This development underscores the growing influence of technology in shaping our entertainment landscape, setting the stage for even more innovative applications in the future.
