In the rapidly evolving world of technology, a significant development has emerged that raises concerns about the growing capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the realm of cybersecurity.

Discovering Zero-Day Bugs and Vulnerabilities

Vlad Ionescu and Ariel Herbert-Voss, co-founders of cybersecurity startup RunSybil, experienced this firsthand when their AI tool, Sybil, detected a weakness in a customer's system last November. This weakness, a problem with the customer's deployment of federated GraphQL, could have inadvertently exposed confidential information.

The discovery of such issues requires a deep understanding of various systems and their interactions, a capability that AI models are increasingly demonstrating. As AI models continue to get smarter, they are becoming more adept at finding zero-day bugs and other vulnerabilities.

Advancements in AI and Cybersecurity

Computer scientist Dawn Song of UC Berkeley, who specializes in AI and security, notes that recent advancements in AI have led to models that are better at finding flaws. Simulated reasoning and agentic AI, which involve splitting problems into constituent pieces and searching the web or installing and running software tools, have significantly enhanced models' cyber abilities.

In a test conducted by Song and her team, a model called Claude Sonnet 4.5 was able to identify 30% of known vulnerabilities in a benchmark, up from 20% by an earlier version, Claude Sonnet 4, in July 2025. This demonstrates the potential for AI agents to find zero-days and do so at a low cost.

Implications for Cybersecurity

Song's findings underscore the need for new countermeasures, including AI assisting cybersecurity experts and the use of AI to generate more secure code from the outset, a concept known as secure-by-design approach.

Another proposed solution is for frontier AI companies to share models with security researchers before launch, allowing them to use the models to find bugs and secure systems before a general release.

The growing capabilities of AI in cybersecurity have implications not only for global cybersecurity but also for regions like Northeast India. As AI models become more adept at finding vulnerabilities, it is crucial for organizations in the region to stay vigilant and adapt their cybersecurity strategies accordingly.
