The Surprising Winner in 5G Coverage: A Road Trip Test
In the race to dominate the 5G market, three major U.S. carriers Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T are fiercely competing to offer the best network signal. But which one truly delivers the most consistent coverage, especially outside city centers? To find out, we embarked on a road trip across the Midwest, testing the network performance of each carrier along the way.
Testing Methodology: A Comprehensive Approach
To ensure a fair comparison, we conducted our tests using three Google Pixel 10 Pros, each equipped with an eSIM card from one of the three carriers. The phones were attached to a 2x4 pine board and powered by an Anker Solix C1000 Gen 2 portable power station. We used the nPerf app to measure the connectivity and strength of the signal as we drove through central Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
- nPerf measures the location, carrier, signal strength, and other useful information for network professionals around 1,500 times per minute.
- Every hour or so, we pulled over to run speed tests using an iPhone 17 with three eSIMs, one for each carrier.
The Results: A Surprising Winner Emerges
The test results showed that all three carriers generally delivered excellent speeds, with speeds in the double and triple-digit areas. However, the standout performer in terms of coverage was T-Mobile, which boasted a coverage rate of 96.2%.
The Importance of Network Architecture
One of the factors that contributed to T-Mobile's impressive performance was its ability to maintain connectivity using a non-standalone (NSA) configuration. While NSA networks are faster and cheaper to set up because they utilize existing 4G infrastructure, standalone (SA) 5G networks are considered the long-term solution due to their lower latency.

As we traveled through the heartland of the Midwest, we wanted to see how the carriers' 5G networks performed in areas between the hotspots. Our test revealed that only T-Mobile managed any connectivity with a non-standalone configuration, indicating that the carrier is investing more in building out its 5G network infrastructure.
