Researchers at Columbia Engineering have made a significant stride in reducing the uncanny valley effect by developing a human-like robot named Emo. This robotic face, covered with silicone skin and driven by 26 independently controlled facial motors, can form detailed mouth shapes, enabling it to lip-sync speech and songs more naturally.

Emo's learning process involved observing online videos of people speaking and singing. An AI model analyzed the relationship between audio and visible lip motion, focusing on the raw sounds of speech rather than language or meaning. This approach allowed Emo to lip-sync not only in English but also in various languages, such as French, Arabic, and Chinese.
