The Data Center Boom: A Growing Energy Demand

The UCS analysis projects a 60 to 80 percent increase in electricity demand through 2050 in the US, with data centers alone accounting for more than half of the increase by the end of this decade. This surge in demand is driven by the increasing reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) and digital services.

Impact on Carbon Emissions and Electricity Costs

If current policies remain unchanged, the analysis predicts a 19 to 29 percent increase in CO2 emissions from US power plants due to the energy needs of data centers over the next ten years. This increase in emissions would lead to higher electricity costs, with wholesale electricity costs rising slightly over the next decade before decreasing by about 4 percent by 2050.

The UCS analysis suggests that reinstating tax credits for wind and solar energy could significantly reduce CO2 emissions, cutting them by more than 30 percent over the next decade. This move would not only help mitigate the impact of data centers on electricity demand but also make wholesale electricity costs more affordable.
