The approach is based on the fact that wastewater contains various bodily fluids, making it a rich biological sample. Researchers at Emory University and Stanford University, led by Marlene Wolfe and Alexandria Boehm respectively, established WastewaterSCAN, an academic-led program aimed at analyzing wastewater samples across the US.

Identifying Measles Cases: Early Detection and Prevention

Two years ago, WastewaterSCAN started testing for measles RNA in wastewater samples. The trials, conducted at two treatment plants in Texas, found measles RNA in 10.5% of the samples collected. The first detection came a week before the first case of measles was officially confirmed in the area, suggesting that wastewater surveillance might pick up measles cases early, giving public health officials a head start in efforts to limit any outbreaks.

Bridging the Gap: From Detection to Action

While wastewater surveillance offers promising results, it has its limitations. It won't tell you who has measles, where exactly infections are occurring, or even how many people are infected. However, researchers are making progress in addressing these limitations. For instance, a team in Canada has been using tampons to soak up wastewater from hospitals, allowing them to estimate the virus's shedding rate and get higher estimates of measles cases compared to the officially reported figures.

The success of wastewater surveillance in the US could have significant implications for public health management in India, including the North East region. By providing early warning signs of potential outbreaks, wastewater surveillance could enable health authorities to take preventive measures more effectively, reducing the spread of diseases and saving lives.
