This maneuver, known as a reboost, is essential to keep the station safely orbiting Earth as atmospheric drag gradually lowers its altitude.

Counteracting Atmospheric Drag

The reboost process involves firing thrusters on one of the docked spacecraft for several minutes, gently pushing the orbital facility to a new altitude. Without these regular reboosts, the ISS would eventually re-enter Earth's atmosphere at high speed, burning up in the process. The latest reboost helps maintain the station's orbit, counteracting atmospheric drag and ensuring the laboratory remains perfectly positioned for science, operations, and visiting spacecraft.

The Future of the ISS and Space Stations

Although the ISS is now at a higher altitude, the crew aboard the station won't notice any difference in microgravity conditions or their view of Earth. However, around 2030, the ISS is expected to be decommissioned due to its aging condition. At that point, a spacecraft will attach to the ISS and use its propulsion to lower its orbit, allowing atmospheric drag to pull it down for a controlled reentry. Some parts of the station may survive reentry and crash into the Pacific Ocean.

The ISS's demise won't mark the end of humans living and working in near-Earth orbit. China already has taikonauts aboard its own space station, while several U.S. companies are working on next-generation stations for international visitors.
