Robert Cochran, the startup's cofounder and CEO, envisions Sprout as a butler that could bring toothbrushes and other items to guests in hotels, offering a personalized service experience. The robot's compact size, engaging demeanor, and safety features make it an ideal candidate for customer interaction, setting it apart from traditional industrial robots.

The Booming US Humanoid Industry

Sprout's launch is part of a growing trend in the United States, where more than a dozen companies are working on humanoids. This includes established players like Boston Dynamics and Tesla, as well as startups such as Agility Robotics, Figure AI, and 1X. Even Unitree, a Chinese robot maker, has found success in the US market with its inexpensive humanoids for entertainment and research purposes.

Fauna positions Sprout as an easy-to-program robot, making it particularly useful in research settings. Equipped with software libraries, Sprout can scan its environment, walk autonomously, access language models, and more. It can also be teleoperated out of the box, a feature that aids in robot training and interaction research, as demonstrated by scientists at New York University.

Unlike most humanoid robots, which are primarily marketed as factory workers, Cochran believes the first market for robots might be in the entertainment and service industries. He envisions Sprout and similar humanoids providing personalized service experiences, breaking through the barriers of traditional customer service.
