First Hints and Promises: The Galaxy Note 10 and Beyond

The journey began back in 2017 when Samsung hinted at the possibility of using a solid-state battery in the Galaxy Note 10. An anonymous executive from Samsung SDI, the department responsible for renewable energy and energy storage systems development, stated that the technological level to produce a solid-state battery for smartphones would be mature enough in one to two years.

Solid-State Batteries in Wearables: A Stepping Stone towards Smartphones

Fast forward to 2024, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, another branch of the Korean conglomerate, announced the successful development of the world's first compact all-solid-state battery for use in wearable devices. This breakthrough paved the way for the Galaxy Watch series and Galaxy Ring to be the first devices to adopt the new technology by the end of 2026.

Competition and Progress: Silicon-Carbon Batteries and Donut Labs

While Samsung is making significant strides in solid-state batteries, the field is not without competition. Companies like Honor have been developing silicon-carbon batteries, which offer higher energy density than Samsung's first-generation solid-state battery. However, these batteries still use liquid electrolyte and geopolitically significant metal ores, whereas solid-state batteries primarily use carbon and silicon, which are abundant, cheap, and readily available.

It remains to be seen whether the Galaxy S26 series will feature a solid-state battery, as production for these models is already underway. However, Samsung has the opportunity to incorporate the technology into the Galaxy S27 series if the wearable's debut goes smoothly. The future of energy storage is promising, and we might have finally solved the battery equation, or at least found a much better solution!
