Analysis: There are just two days left to prevent your Stadia controller from becoming e-waste

Reviving the Stadia Controller: A Second Life for Google's Gaming Hardware

Google's Stadia Sunset: A Three-Year Journey

Google's foray into the gaming market, Stadia, officially closed its doors on January 18, 2023. The cloud-based gaming platform, despite its flaws, marked a significant attempt by the tech giant to disrupt the traditional gaming market. Now, three years later, Google offers a unique opportunity to repurpose the Stadia controller.

A Second Life for the Stadia Controller: Bluetooth Enabled

To prevent the Stadia controller from becoming e-waste, Google introduced a web-based tool to enable its dormant Bluetooth radio. Initially scheduled to be taken offline at the end of 2023, the support was extended until the end of 2024, and then until the end of 2025. As we approach the end of 2025, the opportunity to convert your Wi-Fi-only Stadia controller into a Bluetooth one is closing.

Steps to Convert Your Wi-Fi-Only Stadia Controller

  1. Visit Stadia's controller webpage on your PC.
  2. Connect your Stadia controller to your PC over USB-C.
  3. Allow your browser to verify your controller and then click 'connect'.
  4. Unplug the controller.
  5. Hold the options button (three dot button) and plug in the controller again.
  6. Hold the options button along with the Google Assistant button as well as both A and Y buttons, all at the same time.
  7. Reconnect the controller to your browser and install the Bluetooth update.

Beyond Gaming: Creative Uses for Your Repurposed Stadia Controller

With Bluetooth support, the Stadia controller can now function as a standard controller for PC, Mac, Android, and even iOS devices. This opens up a world of possibilities beyond gaming, making it a versatile addition to your tech arsenal. In the North East region, this versatility could be particularly useful, given the growing interest in PC gaming and tech innovation.

Looking Forward: The Future of Google's Gaming Hardware

While Stadia may have closed its doors, the story doesn't end there. The repurposing of the Stadia controller is a testament to Google's commitment to innovative technology and user experience. As we move forward, it will be interesting to see how Google continues to shape the gaming landscape and leverage its technology for the benefit of users.
