This development, set to connect Lake and Orange counties, could revolutionize the EV landscape, particularly for commercial fleets.

A Testing Ground for the Future of Wireless EV Charging

Backed by a substantial $540 million investment, the project will not only serve as a link between rapidly growing regions but also function as a testing ground for dynamic wireless EV charging technology. The highway will include a 0.75-mile stretch with inductive coils beneath the concrete pavement, capable of delivering up to 200 kW of wireless charging power.

Not Every EV Will Benefit Initially

However, not every EV on sale in the United States is equipped with the necessary hardware to take advantage of the advanced infrastructure. This suggests that the project may primarily serve as a platform for experimentation and testing, paving the way for future improvements in wireless EV charging technology.

Commercial Fleets: The Primary Focus

The primary target of the electrified highway isn't private passenger EVs. Instead, it is commercial fleets, including long-haul trucks, delivery vans, and service vehicles, that could benefit significantly from reduced downtime.

Boosting EV Adoption Rates

The development signals a commitment by state authorities to make wireless EV charging more accessible, a technology that could potentially boost EV adoption rates not just in the United States but globally.

While the project is located in Central Florida, its implications extend far beyond. Looking Ahead

Construction on State Road 516 is already underway, with the electric segment slated to begin in June 2026. If successful, future highways could see wider stretches of electrified roads, paving the way for lighter EV batteries and a more sustainable transportation future.
