Authentication is handled using JWT stored in HttpOnly cookies, which prevents access from JavaScript and works cleanly with credentials: "include". This design allows users to act as both clients and freelancers without separate accounts, providing a seamless user experience.

The Hiring Problem: Preventing Race Conditions

The most important rule in GigFlow is that only one freelancer can be hired for a gig ever. To solve race conditions, the hire logic is wrapped inside a MongoDB session + transaction. This guarantees exactly one hired freelancer, no partial or inconsistent state, and ensures the system behaves correctly under pressure.

Real-Time Updates with Socket.io

Once a freelancer is hired, the backend emits a hire event to that freelancer's socket room, updating the freelancer's dashboard instantly. This feature eliminates the need for polling, refreshing, or waiting for updates, providing instant feedback to users.
