The reasons for migration can vary, ranging from moving legacy data to a new service, to sharing responsibilities between different systems requiring a consistent data interface.

As businesses in North East India increasingly rely on digital platforms, understanding data migration becomes crucial. Ensuring the seamless transfer of data between services will help maintain the integrity of critical business operations and reduce potential downtime.

Before embarking on a data migration project, it is essential to evaluate its technical feasibility. This assessment depends on a thorough study of the available data, including complexity, risks, and costs. Although the decision to migrate may come from the product team, the engineering team must assess the technical viability of the migration.

Before committing to a migration, it is crucial to analyze the volume, structure, and complexity of the data involved. For instance, it may not be worth paralyzing a few developers for several sprints to migrate 15 records if the engineering cost is too high for a minimal impact on the product.

ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) is a method created specifically to organize and structure data migration processes. While ETL is not a silver bullet, it can be an effective solution when the migration needs to be executed multiple times or reused in the future.

For smaller migrations, I prefer using simple solutions. In particular, I like using Jupyter Notebooks, especially when the source data is in spreadsheets or small databases. In these scenarios, it makes little sense to build a dedicated application to execute a one-time process.

For larger migrations, I prefer creating a local application that runs via terminal using a simple CLI. This approach provides more predictability, control over execution, and ease in handling large volumes of data.

It is essential to have a rollback strategy in place, as a migration may not run perfectly the first time. Testing in a staging environment before executing in production and aligning the rollout with the team are key to a successful migration.

Real-world data migrations may involve dealing with incomplete or inconsistent data, requiring explicit treatment. Additionally, enriching data by accessing other databases or services can increase complexity.
