Datalaria's Journey: The Jamstack Approach

Why Datalaria's Choice of Technology Matters

Understanding the Objectives

The primary objective of Datalaria is experimentation and exploration of various topics, tools, and technologies. With a focus on learning and long-term growth, Datalaria set forth several key pillars: Learning and Control (Priority #1), Performance, Security, and Low Initial Cost and Scalability. These criteria were used to evaluate the two main web construction philosophies.

The Traditional Path: Why Not WordPress?

WordPress, the undisputed king of content management, powers over 40% of the web. Despite its powerful and flexible nature, it presented several challenges for Datalaria's objectives. WordPress offered a different learning curve, slower performance due to dynamic nature, increased security risks, and higher initial costs.

The Modern Approach: Jamstack to the Rescue

Enter the Jamstack (JavaScript, APIs, and Markup) as a revolutionary architecture that decouples the frontend from the backend. The idea is simple: instead of building the page every time a user requests it, build it once during deployment. The result is a collection of pre-generated HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files, essentially a static site. These files are then distributed globally through a Content Delivery Network (CDN).

Datalaria's Stack: Hugo, GitHub, Netlify

Once the Jamstack approach was chosen, it was time to select the tools. Hugo (The Static Site Generator - SSG) was chosen for its speed and power. GitHub (The Repository and Version Control) served as the "source of truth," providing a complete history of changes and a central point for managing the project. Netlify (The Hosting and Continuous Deployment - CI/CD) brought the magic, automatically building and deploying the site upon GitHub updates.

Relevance to North East India and Beyond

The choice between WordPress and a Jamstack approach is not about "better" or "worse," but aligning the tool with the objective. For Datalaria, a project born out of curiosity and the desire to learn, the Jamstack approach with Hugo, GitHub, and Netlify has been ideal. It offers control, performance, and most importantly, turns the very act of maintaining the blog into a valuable continuous learning experience.

Looking Forward

As Datalaria continues to grow and evolve, so too will its technological choices. The Jamstack approach has proven to be a solid foundation, providing a platform for experimentation and exploration. The journey is far from over, and with each new post, Datalaria moves closer to its goal of fostering a community of learners and innovators in North East India and beyond.
